Wolds Wildlife Park is in the market town of Horncastle, right on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds and is often referred to as the “Gateway to the Wolds”
The Wolds comprise of rolling fields, hidden valleys and picturesque villages, this unspoilt stretch of countryside, was in 1973, designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, protecting it for future generations. The landscape is considered to be some of the finest in Britain, with woodland, grassland and abandoned chalk pits providing important habitats for rare flowers and wildlife.
Less than 30 miles from Horncastle are the beautiful wide open beaches of the Lincolnshire coast.
Other attractive market towns in the area to visit are:
- Alford which has one of the oldest craft markets in the UK
- East Kirkby – if you are an avid aviation fan you must visit the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre in the centre of this small village
- Louth, once named “Britains Finest Market Town” by the BBCs Countryfile programme and hailed as a “food mecca” by TV Chefs The Hairy Bikers
- Spilsby – home to the National Trust’s impressive Gunby Hall Estate.
- Market Rasen with its own race course
- Caistor – a popular spot for hikers as the Viking Way runs through the centre of the town
- Woodhall Spa with its vibrant main street and its unique multi-screen kinema
- Tattershall/Coningsby – visit Tattershall Castle (National Trust) or The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, which includes a range of fully operational historic aircraft, including the much loved Lancaster bomber, the C47 Dakota carrier, as well as some spitfire and hurricane fighter planes.
